The Windrush Bridge
The Windrush Bridge is a research initiative exploring the barriers that Commonwealth citizens face in understanding the Windrush Scheme. While the Windrush scandal is often associated with Caribbean communities, many individuals from non-Caribbean Commonwealth backgrounds may also be affected, not realising that the scheme applies to them.
This project aims to better understand why awareness and access to information about the Windrush Scheme is not equal across all communities.
Why this research matters
Some Commonwealth citizens outside of the Caribbean community may:
- Be unaware that they are eligible under the Windrush Scheme
- Believe the scheme only applies to Caribbean nationals
- Face language, cultural, or informational barriers
- Lack trust or confidence in engaging with official processes
As a result, many people may not seek information or support. This research aims to identify these barriers and help improve how information is shared in the future.
About the research
We are inviting Commonwealth citizens, particularly those outside of the Caribbean community to share their views on:
- Their understanding of the Windrush Scheme
- How they access information
- Any challenges they have faced
Participation involves completing a short survey. All responses areย anonymous, and no personal identifying information is collected.
Who can take part
You may wish to participate if you are a Commonwealth citizen, live or have lived in the UK, and are from a non-Caribbean background. You do not need to have made a claim or know whether you are eligible.
